Developing the State of Aging Portland Website
Abstract:
This paper reports on an effort to develop a website about the lives of older persons in Portland, Oregon for the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability. The main purpose was to provide a resource for Portland city planners to help them better plan to meet the needs of older persons. A secondary goal was to provide a resource for the non-profits that serve older people in Portland. The report has six main sections: (1) overview, (2) population, (3) race and Hispanic orgin, (4) disability, (5) housing and (6) livability. Parts 2-5 are essentially a social demography of Portland’s older population. Part 6 is a review of how older people responded to an annual livability survey by the City. The main data sources for the study were the Decennial Census, the American Community Survey, licensing data for senior facilities, housing data from Portland Metro, the Portland Livability Survey, and a variety of mapping sources. The overview and the detailed reports were created using Microsoft PowerPoint. Maps and GIS analysis were done using ArcMap 10.71 and Office 365. Converter Pro 9 by iSpring was used to convert the PowerPoint files into HTML5 code and the results are available on this Portland State University website: https://soaportland.cupa.pdx.edu/overview/ . Most of the report consists of interpretation of maps and charts on the topics listed above. This presentation will provide an overview of the website, explore several topics, and will discuss the website development process.
