Online story maps of capital punishment in the US for enhancing spatial thinking
Abstract:
Traditionally, the Southern states are conceived as the regions where most death penalties were placed. But, "Is there any shifting geography of capital punishment in the US?" remains a question we seek answers to. We mapped death penalty rates by county using the dataset spanning the last 45 years. The Modifiable Unit Area Problem that hinders information delivery from the maps was handled by data normalization and dot-density maps. Using the ESRI's story map apps, we collected responses of a number of high-school and college students who were asked to explore the capital punishment distribution maps to five designed questions regarding knowledge dissipation by the web GIS system. The results confirmed that the use of web GIS technology could enhance students' think and reason of geographical knowledge.
